The spectral line at 1216 Å corresponds to the Lyman-alpha radiation named after American physicist Theodore Lyman, this is the transition of an electron between the two lowest energy levels of a hydrogen atom. The Ly-alpha line is the most fundamental transition of the most abundant atom in the universe. As such, the line is a valuable diagnostic for many purposes. (e.g Ly-alpha line emission is an efficient tool for identifying young galaxies). For the Sun, brightening of Ly-alpha radiation may indicate an increase in solar radiation reaching Earth (most impact on Earth and heliosphere). It allows studying all features typical of the solar lower atmosphere such as the network, spicules, cold loops, filaments etc.

On the other hand, since the solar radiant flux is very small at Ly-alpha, there is a general need in solar missions for large size (area), solarblind and highly VUV sensitive photodiodes. For the direct detection with high sensitivity, new photodiodes must be built from other materials than silicon, and different materials have to be used for VUV and X-ray sensors, than for infrared devices (e.g LYRA and Premos projects).

The technological purpose of this activity (in collaboration with IMO and IEMN) is to fabricate a large PIN diamond photodiodes with a sharp diamond band edge around 225 nm with a visible rejection ratio (200 versus 500 nm) of more than five orders of magnitude. LAPIN diamond photodiode should prove their general suitability for space applications. The requirements are radiation hardness, solar-blindness, high sensitivity and fast response, good uniformity, good linearity and dynamic range, temperature and long term stability, and low intrinsic dark current and noise. Diamond photodiodes have high potential to reach all these specifications and to surpass existing technology.
